On Sunday, 30 August, the big day will finally have arrived: the first day of the European Sand Sculptures Festival 2009. From then until 27 September, seven gigantic sand sculptures will be on display for all to see – free.
The theme for 2009 is ‘Princesses’. Six Disney princesses made from sand will be created on Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Ariel (from ‘The Little Mermaid’), and Jasmine (from ‘Aladdin’). A sneak preview will also be available in the form of Princess Tiana, the newest Disney princess appearing in the Disney film ‘The Princess and the frog’. This sculpture will be located on the roundabout near Palace Square in front of the Palace Hotel.
Children from all over the country are being invited to come to Kon. Wilhelmina Boulevard dressed in costume on 5 and 6 September. The programme will include lots of ‘royal activities’ in which princesses – and princes and knights, of course – can participate for free. Have fun in the ‘Dancing like a prince and princess’ workshop, build your own sand sculpture, and have yourself made up! A jury will be walking around to determine who will win the prize for the best costume. So it’s worth the extra effort to get all dressed up because there will be wonderful prizes to win.
