Leiden
Most certainly worth a visit. This convivial old Dutch university city has a splendid cultural historical past, and the impressive facades and canals are lovely to behold. For four centuries now Leiden has set the tone in making discoveries: not only have many been made, but there are also many delightful discoveries to be made in the city itself. A large general market is held by the water every Wednesday and Saturday; a market which dates back nine centuries! As you wend your way through the marvelous historical city centre it seems the city’s rich past is coming alive again.
Rembrandt was born here and learned his painting skills here too. Clusius got the first Dutch tulips blooming here more than 400 years ago. The oldest playhouse in the Netherlands is to be found in Leiden too. Leiden has 12 world class museums, the priceless and unique collections of which are internationally renowned.
The museums in Leiden offer an astonishing range of nature, art and culture. Exhibitions, workshops and events bring the exceptional collections to life. There are exciting and enjoyable treats in store for children at weekends and in the holidays. You´ll find the up to date programme on http://www.museumgroep.nl/english/intro.html
