Dahlia Route: 36 km past dahlias, villages, dunes and the sea
From mid-August to mid-October, you can enjoy the colourful dahlia flowers. They can be admired in several dahlia show gardens throughout the Bollenstreek flower region.
Get on your bike and discover summer and early autumn at their most colourful. The Dahlia Route is a varied 36-kilometre cycling tour through Noordwijkerhout, Lisse, Voorhout and Noordwijk. Along the way, you will pass colourful dahlia gardens, leafy country estates, historic village centres, dunes and the sea.
The route starts at cycle junction 80 in the welcoming centre of Noordwijkerhout. From here, you cycle through the green countryside towards the Oosterduinse Meer and Landgoed Tespelduyn. Climb to the viewpoint at Tespelduyn and enjoy sweeping views across the Bollenstreek, Landgoed Keukenhof and Hollandse Duinen National Park.

Dahlias at Kasteel Keukenhof
One of the most colourful stops is Landgoed Kasteel Keukenhof. During the summer, hundreds of different dahlia varieties bloom in the castle gardens and at Frederik’s Hof. Wander among the flowers and admire their extraordinary colours and shapes, with the historic castle as a backdrop.
Ready for a break? Stop at the Hofboerderij on the estate for coffee, lunch or something delicious.
De Tulperij and I Love Dahlia
The route then continues through the rural countryside to De Tulperij. In late summer, its large show garden is filled with hundreds of flowering dahlia varieties. Stroll through the garden, pick your own bouquet when available or join a guided tour to learn more about growing dahlias. From the terrace, you can look out across the colourful flower landscape.
A sea of flowers also awaits at I Love Dahlia in Noordwijkerhout. Its show and picking garden is home to numerous dahlia varieties. On designated days, you can create your own bouquet to take home.
From the flower fields to the sea
The route then takes you past the leafy Landgoed Offem to Streekmuseum Veldzicht. Here, you can learn more about local life, agriculture and the history of flower-bulb cultivation in the Duin- en Bollenstreek.
You then cycle through the historic centre of Noordwijk Binnen, with its charming streets and monumental buildings. The route continues through the dunes to Noordwijk aan Zee. Enjoy views across the beach and the North Sea or get off your bike for a relaxing break by the coast.
Finally, you cycle through the green countryside back to the centre of Noordwijkerhout. End your day on one of the welcoming terraces around the White Church and look back on a colourful cycling tour through the region.
Practical information
The Dahlia Route is 36 kilometres long and follows the Dutch cycle-junction network. The official starting and finishing point is cycle junction 80 on Havenstraat in Noordwijkerhout, although you can also join the route at another point along the way.
Dahlias generally bloom from summer until early autumn. The exact flowering period depends on the weather and varies between gardens. Before setting off, check the latest opening hours, flowering information and options for guided tours or flower picking.
Always remain on the designated roads and paths around flower fields. Do not enter privately owned fields or country estates, and only pick flowers where this is expressly permitted.

- Een van de eerste hoogtepunten onderweg zijn de kasteeltuinen van Landgoed Kasteel Keukenhof. De tuinen zijn gratis toegankelijk en staan in deze periode vol met honderden soorten dahlia’s in alle kleuren, vormen en maten. Met het historische kasteel op de achtergrond levert dat prachtige plaatjes op. Tijdens het jaarlijkse Dahlia Festival van 28 t/m 30 aug 2026 zijn de tuinen extra bijzonder aangekleed met uitgebreide showtuinen, dahliasculpturen en speciale arrangementen.
- Toe aan een pauze? Op het landgoed vind je ook restaurant Hofboerderij, een heerlijke plek voor koffie, lunch of iets lekkers tussendoor.
- Daarna fiets je verder door de prachtige streek richting Voorhout. Hier kom je langs De Tulperij, een sfeervolle familiekwekerij waar in de zomer meer dan 600 soorten dahlia’s te bewonderen zijn. Je vindt hier een grote showtuin, een pluktuin én de mogelijkheid om meer te leren over de teelt van dahlia’s tijdens een excursie. Vanaf het gezellige terras kijk je uit over de bloemenvelden terwijl je geniet van koffie en huisgemaakte taart.
- Vervolgens fiets je verder richting knooppunt…. Over de fietsbrug vind je I Love Dahlia, bekend om de kleurrijke pluktuin waar je zelf een prachtig boeket kunt samenstellen om mee naar huis te nemen.
- Daarna gaat de route richting Noordwijk, waar je een bezoek kunt brengen aan Museum Veldzicht. Dit historische museum laat zien hoe het leven in de Duin- en Bollenstreek er vroeger uitzag. Je vindt er onder andere een authentieke bollenschuur, historische landbouwmaterialen, oude ambachten en informatie over de geschiedenis van de bloembollenteelt in de streek. Maar natuurlijk hebben ze ook schitterende Dahlia’s staan.
- Dan fiets je verder door het sfeervolle historische Noordwijk Binnen en natuurlijk ook even langs de boulevard en zee. Geniet onderweg van het uitzicht over het strand, de duinen en sluit de route af met een lekker ijsje aan de kust.
- Tot slot eindigd de fietsroute weer in het sfeervolle centrum van Noordwijkerhout waar je nog lekker even kan na genieten op één van de gezellige tertasjes.
